Walraven was commissioned to develop a maintenance access solution for the technical plant of the Tres Cantos Laboratory in Madrid, Spain. Working closely with Construcciones Carlos Rubio e Hijos, Walraven provided the design, calculations and support needed to create safe access throughout the facility.

Creating safe maintenance access

The technical plant covered approximately 750 m² and contained a complex network of cable trays, pipework and ducting. To enable safe maintenance access, the project required more than 100 metres of walkways across multiple levels.

Several challenges had to be addressed:

  • Safe access to all technical installations throughout the facility.
  • More than 100 metres of maintenance walkways at varying heights.
  • Attachment to the existing structure without adding supports to the raised access floor.
  • A complex framework design using omega profiles as the primary support structure.

Tailored walkway solution

Walraven designed and supplied a maintenance walkway system comprising:

  • Walraven RapidStrut® fixing rails.
  • Strut system accessories.
  • Walraven Yeti® walkway steps and grating platforms.
  • Walraven Yeti® 335 support systems.

Walraven fixed the raised access floor panels to omega brackets and suspended the brackets from the main structure using rods. As a result, the existing load-bearing structure supports the maintenance walkway system, eliminating the need to drill into the raised floor.

Delivering a complex installation

Walraven carefully designed the route of the walkways to navigate around existing installations and accommodate the varying height levels throughout the plant.

By adapting the design to the available load-bearing structure, Walraven was able to provide a safe and practical maintenance access solution without impacting the technical floor below. Construcciones Carlos Rubio e Hijos completed the installation in accordance with the end customer’s requirements and Walraven’s technical specifications.
